About the Project

Carnarvon Common Ground started with an Aboriginal-led group who wanted change for the better.

Negative stories about crime, youth issues, and alcohol and drug problems were shaping the town, and it was time to change that narrative.

We knew the answer was in listening to our community about the real issues and what we can do as a community to help.

We discovered “justice reinvestment” which puts time and money into community-led long-term programs that help prevent alcohol, drugs, crime and mental health issues rather than the end result of prison.

What is Justice Reinvestment?

It’s a big task but Carnarvon is lucky to have some great service providers already based here. We’re working with them to ensure they know exactly what the community need.

Carnarvon Common Ground has also identified some key priorities through surveying and feedback and is in the process of creating programs to help fill the gaps.

Our Vision

Built by us, for us – Carnarvon is a community that respects its rich cultural heritage, empowers its youth to shape the future, and grows stronger through unity and shared responsibility.

Together, we create a safe, inclusive, and vibrant town where everyone belongs, we’re open to opportunities, and resilience is our foundation.

Our Artists

Respected member of Carnarvon Common Ground, Devinia Wainwright collaborated and mentored Theonie McKenna to create the artwork for the Project. This piece tells the story of our community walking together toward a shared future. It represents the Common Ground as a place where services and community unite to provide support, guidance, connection, and healing for our youth and families.

The river meeting the sea – a landmark of Carnarvon -symbolises peace, grounding, and our deep connection to spirit and ancestors who walk with us every day. Our lands and ocean sustain us with traditional foods like mullet, kangaroo, and turtle, keeping us strong and healthy while preserving our culture for generations to come.
